A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

A short side story set in the Suikoden world. If you have played some of the Suikoden games, and continually heard about the land Kanakan, you may have wondered what it's like. I certainly have! So I decided to create a series of short stories set there.

I'd describe it as an adventure game but using the Suikoden town/world engine. There is no combat, you just walk around the city and follow the story. Gameplay time is roughly 40 minutes.

The version here is considered a 'release candidate'. Basically that means I'm considering the content basically finished but am looking for feedback on bugs. I'm very interested in hearing about anything that prevents you from getting to the end of the game; whether you are able to get it to run, if you get stuck somewhere, if you can't figure out what to do, etc. Leave a comment if you have problems with it.

Install instructions

Web Version

This is the simplest way to play the game, with no separate download needed. I've found it runs at a decent framerate on Chrome, but is much slower in Firefox. If you experience slowness with this version, try into either of the download options.

Using the Jar file

Requires Java (tested on Java 8 and 11)

java -jar <name_of_jar>.jar on Windows/Linux

You may also be able to double-click the Jar on Windows to run it.
java -XstartOnFirstThread -jar <name_of_jar>.jar on Mac

Using Bundled Executable

Bundled executables for Windows, OSX, and Linux are now available. These include  a bundled version of Java and as such don't require you to download Java separately. As a result, these downloads are much bigger than the simple JAR download, so if you have Java installed already the JAR file download is recommended.

Thanks, and good work on bringing a piece of Kanakan to life for us, Crock. This is actually Templeton301 by the way.  And I see that Their Star is here as well. 

And since were all here and as well we all share the same common interest of the wider world of Suikoden, I would like to make a proposition for anyone who would be interested. 

As you see, thecrock has just completed for us a story set in Kanakan, this is what some would consider "Gamma Canon" or a production from a fan that goes into visual detail with its setting. I would actually, if it were possible, document it into an "Suikoden Expanded Universe" file and see what could be done to recognize the information that the author (the crock) added to the Suikoden world through the fangame. And yes, this would be done only with the authorization of the author, along with the measures that need to be taken in regards to maintaining copyright legality.

Yes the Suikoden world is vast, the thing is, is that the citizens of this world lack any knowledge of celestial travel in order to enter the space age and continue the human need to leave ones location and settle in a new frontier. Once there is no more land to conquer that is (so to speak). Not to mention, such a concept in Suikoden is science fiction, and who would even want to see anything such as that in the first place. 

My goal and the proposition that i'm proposing at the moment is however. Would be for us to defy the laws of nature in the setting of that world, and have it geoformed so that it would continue in all directions as the story, and the setting it is in, develops through future fan productions.  We should even go about integrating into this world the off shoot canons from the post Suikoden five era. As for the locations featured in Eiyuden Chronicle. Well if you think about it, there is an entirely  empty continent featured on the west side of the map of Suikoden (Too TheirStar's credit), it would make sense too, in time, place it there.

This expansion and merger of worlds is a geographical measure that is needed in order to counter any stagnation through the limited number of continents. Which in time, by default, would lead to the eventual end of the series.

And why even allow conflict to exist in this world in the first place. It is a story after all,  which means eliminating conflict and any violence from that society can be done. Why not send the warriors and heroes out and just have them only attack the monsters. Doing this would also make it easier for future authors to focus on what really matters the most. Increasing the size of the world and giving its locations and its peoples detail and life.

This is where Ill pause however, in order to hear from you yourselves what you may think is the right path for Suikoden, and to see if there is anything we have in common in order to achieve the goals that we may individually have in mind.

Also, this is something I would  of actually preferred to of placed instead on the forums of Suikosource. If not for the security requirements.

Hi, I love this. I really love the small, intimate scope of the game especially. So many fan projects over extend themselves this is such a nice, sweet little adventure set in the wider Suikoden world. I'm inspired!

Thanks again (I know I responded on Twitter too, but I can use more characters in one post here); project scoping aside, I really do think that small stories about regular people are worth telling. And making the stories about kids is a great excuse to not have to put in the work to make a battle system. 

The idea for this came up after I saw the most recent Star Wars mainline movie in theaters. I was thinking about how that universe has media set everywhere, telling stories of characters you'd never see in the mainline movies. It just made me sad that Suikoden's rich world doesn't have that. Sure, it did, for a short period where the series was successful enough to warrant production of the Gaidens and novels and manga and whatnot.  But they didn't get very far in filling out the world! Then they kind of gave up with the million worlds, which was really disappointing.

So I decided to just start making these stories myself. This project took me about 15 months. I have the script all ready for the second game and ideas for the third and fourth games. Hopefully I can crank out one of these every 12-15 months.

Love the unique sound of this game and hopefully you can do upgrades here and there later on much like the "Suikoden VI" fangame which took place in Kanakan as well.

Thanks! I'm working on the story for the next volume at the moment. I hope to make each successive game with some graphical upgrades (especially main character sprites/animations). Later I hope to upgrade the graphics on this first game as well.

Could you link me to the Suikoden VI Kanakan fangame? I googled it and couldn't find it.

Also I am very glad you liked the sound. The music of Suikoden (especially the first two games) has always been one of my favorite parts. Probably half the reason I wanted to do this project is for the opportunity to write the soundtrack.

My tablet is my only internet source I have and it lacks the ability to connect (copy and paste) anything onto a screen.

So I'll do some search describing to help.

1) This game was played by game reviewers Kensin and gensogamer.

2)  The main characters name is "Ryan" (same as me).

3) I used Google to find it.

4) The point of the game is to find the "Five runs shards" of what I believe was a true rune (never got to the end of the game).

5) Just simply try "Let's play Suikoden VI" on your search engine.
